The L.S. Starrett Company, founded in 1880, manufactures more than 5,000 variations of Precision Tools, Gages, Measuring Instruments and Saw Blades for industrial, professional and consumer markets worldwide. Starrett, a leader who has set the standard for fine precision tools in industry for over 130 years, has rightfully earned the title, “World’s Greatest Toolmakers”. “Like all businesses, however large or complex, this one started with a man and an idea. The man was Laroy S. Starrett; his idea was ‘to invent something useful that people would want.’ Countless others have had a similar idea, the difference here was in the quality of the man. L.S. Starrett’s outstanding characteristic was confidence in himself; he was a man who in spite of one setback after another refused to admit defeat. He had unusual ability, vision and enterprise, but without his high courage this story of the foundation and growth of ‘the world’s greatest toolmakers’ could never have been written…”

Raymond E. DEWALT followed in his father’s steps, and worked in plants and construction after leaving school. In all fields of work he encountered the issue of high labour costs. To help reduce these costs, whenever possible he installed a machine to handle specific needs.
One fine day, M. DEWALT was hired to head a wood mill, manufacturing numerous products, from basic boxes to complete houses. The amount of work exceeded the company’s capacity by far, but its owner could not afford to increase the headcount. The only solution was to ensure his men produced more work. M. DEWALT built a yoke, which he connected directly to a motor and a saw. He then fitted it onto a standard arm. The saw could be raised, lowered, moved forward and backward, and adapted to all types of angles. With this system, he could handle the same amount of work as four men, reducing labor costs beyond his wildest imagination.

Draper Tools was started in 1919 when the founder, Bert Draper, sold government surplus and tools in markets around the Kingston Upon Thames area. This led to the purchase of the original warehouse, from which the Draper Tool Company Limited as we know it today was born, although at this time it was known as B. Draper & Son Limited and owned the trademark B.D.S. Although Draper Tools sold its own brand as early as this time, it was also a quality Engineers Merchant and Tool Wholesaler, selling brands that are well known today, such as, Britool, King Dick, Elliott Lucas, etc.
When Bert Draper passed away in 1963, control of the Company passed to his son Norman. With the increased business and cramped conditions at Kingston Upon Thames, Norman purchased the freehold rights to the current premises in Chandler’s Ford, Hampshire at auction the same year. Norman pushed the business forward dramatically and developed the ‘Draper’ brand as we know it today, by importing quality tools from all around the World. He also established ‘exclusive’ relationships on a family to family basis, with such Companies as Elora and Knipex, which still exist today.
Norman died in 1994 and the Company is now run by his son, John. His wife Joan, who passed away in 1999, produced, almost single-handedly, the Company’s first type-written catalogue in 1953. This level of family involvement would be rare in any other company of this size in the UK… But then Draper Tools is no ‘other company!’
John took over the reins in 1992 with the task of taking the company into the new century. Draper Tools continues to thrive on a mixture of inward investment, active support for the independent stockist, striving for operational efficiency and all underpinned by the golden rule since 1919 – Guaranteed Quality. The current premises in Chandler’s Ford have been added to considerably since its purchase and has now reached a size of 535,000 sq.ft. It is now probably the largest stock of tools in one place in the UK.

In 1886, our iconic brand was born. Today, it is still a symbol of quality.
Discover the history that goes into every Bahco product.
SO WHY DO…Bahco products carry a fish and a hook?
After Göran Fredrik Göransson had established his steel mill in 1862, the European steel industry in the eighteen seventies had a long depression with low prices for general steel and crude steel products. The prices for processed steel were much better, which created an interest in processing the steel further. In 1876 the existing steel rolling mill was changed to produce so-called milled steel.
When the production of saw blades commenced in 1886 there was a need for a brand, which could communicate the blades’ special properties and quality, and the choice was – quite naturally – the fish and hook.

Spear & Jackson
If there is one word that people associate with Sheffield it is steel. The city, (then a mere town) was known for the production of knives in the 14th century, and by 1600 had become the main centre for cutlery manufacture in England. In the 1740s, a form of the crucible steel process was discovered that allowed the manufacture of better quality steel and this innovation spurred the growth of Sheffield as an industrial town. And it was not long after – in 1760 – when the foundations of the one of the city’s best known firms, and one synonymous with steel; Spear & Jackson, were laid.
It was in this year that a draper named John Love and a Wakefield merchant, Alexander Spear, decided that steel offered a better living than cloth and went into business together. By 1814, the business had passed down to Alexander’s nephew John, who took on an apprentice – Sam Jackson – to learn ‘ye art, trade or mistery of sawmaking’. Sam’s first job was carrying blades from the forge to the grinding wheels and by 1830, a new partnership was formed – Spear & Jackson. Neill Tools, Spear & Jackson’s parent company, can meanwhile ‘only’ chart a history as far back as 1889, when James Neill, a successful accountant, turned to steelmaking and patented composite steel (steel-backed iron) for hacksaw blades. Registering the Eclipse trademark in 1909, Neill started making the world’s first composite steel hacksaw blades in 1911.
By 1924, frames had been added to the range and the company introduced the classic shape which all hacksaws now mirror. Fast-forwarding to the 80s, Neill Tools bought Spear & Jackson in 1985, renaming the business Spear & Jackson plc in 1995. But Neill, Eclipse and Spear & Jackson aren’t the whole brand story. The group also includes the famous WHS trowel brand. Originally known as William Hunt & Sons, WHS is popularly said to stand for ‘Work Hard or Starve’ and – among other things – its 4″ pointing trowels are especially favoured by archaeologists; rows breaking out on the internet whenever another trowel company tries to win the hearts and minds of these ‘time team’ diggers. Also within the company is the well-known Tyzack range of plastering tools. Founded by another Sheffield lad, William Tyzack (1781- 1858); the company really got into its stride through his nephew Joseph. Having developed a profitable working relationship with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Joseph registered the Isle of Man triskelion ‘legs’ – still proudly worn by the company today – with the Cutlers’ Company in 1847.
The organisation has come a long way since 1760, and the Spear & Jackson Group now manufactures and distributes garden tools, metrology equipment, woodworking tools and magnetic equipment under several brand names: Neill Tools, Bowers, Robert Sorby, Moore and Wright, Eclipse, WHS and Tyzack. With divisions across England, France, China and Australia, Spear & Jackson distributes products throughout the world.
