Landing Gear

One of the major components of any aircraft is the landing gear. It absorbs the enormous forces on take-off and especially during landing. Besides the engine, the components used here are subject to the strictest demands in terms of reliability and functionality under extreme conditions. The main components of the landing gear are the landing gear support beams, master cylinders, hydraulic components, connecting elements, axles and wheels. While some aircraft models use aluminum, the most commonly used materials are alloyed steels and titanium.

The main types of machining used are 3- and 5-axis milling, boring and fine boring. The size of these components impos limitations on the machine environment. Large portal milling machines and mill-turn centres must be used. In addition, the users rely on multi-spindle machines with very high torque. Landing Gears Master Cylinder

The master cylinder of the landing gear, along with the connecting elements, provide the suspension and absorbs impact during landing. The complex design enables the landing gear to be extended and retracted within seconds. Depending on the size of the aircraft, there are different versions in terms of number and overall size. Since these components must satisfy the most rigorous safety standards, only very few materials qualify for use, principally titanium alloys and 300M.

Landing Gear Support Beam

The landing gear support beam is a complex structural component. It constitutes the connecting unit between wing and landing gear, and acts as a shock absorber in conjunction with the landing strut. The main landing gear and its support beams are amongst the most highly stressed components in an aircraft. The most commonly used material is titanium, and in some variants, aluminium alloys are also used.

Like the other structural components, pocket milling and contouring are the main methods of machining, and the size of these components imposes limitations on the machine environment. Large portal milling machines are used almost exclusively here. In addition to this, users are opting for high-torque multi-spindle machines.
